Zakynthos or Zante

Zakynthos or Zante is an enchanting Ionian Sea island with great natural beauty. White beaches, sea turtles and a party atmosphere make Zakynthos, a favorite holiday destination. The Venetians called this southernmost Ionian island, Fiore di Levante, the Flower of the East. Its nobility and fertility made it the jewel of their empire.

It is not without a reason that the Caretta-Caretta turtles have chosen some of its magnificent beaches to lay their eggs on. Sanctuary of the Caretta-Caretta turtle, Zakynthos is the foremost reproduction site where you can observe this rare species in their natural habitat, Marathonisi islet or Caretta’s Fun Park.

Another important species that is found in the water of Zakynthos is the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus-Monachus, which is among the rarest mammal species of the world. The monk seals go in the secluded caves of Zakynthos to give birth to their youth, while the newly-born seal stays in the cave for two weeks before it gets into the sea.

The most famous sightseeing in Zakynthos is the Navagio or Shipwreck Beach that has taken its name from a rusty, wrecked ship that is found on shore. This beach can be accessed with a boat that also passes from the exotic Blue Caves.

Other beautiful beaches in Zakynthos Greece are Gerakas, Laganas, Agios Nikolaos, Kalamaki, Tsilivi, Porto Zoro and Spanzia. Most beaches on the eastern side of the island are organized, while the beaches on the western side are secluded. Zakynthos’ mesmerizing crystal-clear waters are ideal for sailing and outdoor activities, such as waters sports at Alykanas and Banana beach, or scuba diving along the magical underwater world and the fascinating caves.

Apart from enjoying the emerald sea, visit Zakynthos Town for a great fusion of authentic food, great nightlife and immersive experiences. Strongly influenced by the Venetians, Zakynthos Town has many hidden gems to explore. Saint Mark Square, the Venetian Castle, Solomos Square and the Post-Byzantine Museum of Zante are some of the most interesting spots to visit in Zakynthos Town.
A drive around Zakynthos island, will bring you to traditional villages, old monasteries of extraordinary architecture and Venetian landmarks in every corner of the island that reflect its rich heritage.
